School Quality Snapshot
Overview:
The Department of Education collects a lot of information about how well schools serve their students. Families, school staff, and students answer survey questions about their schools. Experienced educators conduct a two-day school visit, where they observe classrooms, speak with the school community and write detailed reports of what they learned. The city tracks results like test scores and graduation rates. The School Quality Snapshot displays summaries of all of this information as well as general information about the school. The tool is defined into 7 categories Student Achievement, Rigorous Instruction, Collaborative Teachers, Supportive Environment, Effective School Leadership, Strong Family Community Ties, and Trust.
Problem:
How do we effectively communicate how a school is performing to different users. The target end users are the public, school staff, superintendents, and central office.

Accessibility
We constantly have to make sure our products are accessible. We meet AA standard for this product as well as making reader accessible.
Accessibility is a vital thing to take into consideration. With such a wide audience we want to make sure the information is accessible to as many of our users as possible. We compare all colors to make sure we are in good standing.
School Information
This is the start screen in the product. Once you select a certain school/ year it will populate with the general information for the school/ year you have requested. We utilized some simple legible graphics to display how a school is doing in certain areas that have been assessed. The layered circle info-graphic was a requirement by the DEO, so to embrace it we built around it.
Student Achievement
This is one of the metrics that are assessed and are needed to be shown in this product. I wanted to communicate through color consistency. Showing in bold large text their standing exemplifies a quick understanding.
The Student Achievement rating looks at this school's State test results, including student growth and performance; how students performed in core courses; and how well students are prepared for middle school.
Rigorous Instruction
This is another of the metrics that are assessed and is being shown in this product. Again communicating with color using the orange on orange allows for fluid language and shows this is a new page, which seemed to be some of the confusion in previous designs.
The Rigorous Instruction rating looks at how well curriculum and instruction are designed to engage students, foster critical thinking skills, and are aligned to the Common Core.
Collaborative Teachers
Creating hierarchy in the information allows for quick navigation and information to be processed.
The Collaborative Teachers rating looks at how well teachers participate in opportunities to develop, grow, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the school community.
Supportive Environment
The Supportive Environment rating looks at how well the school establishes a culture where students feel safe, challenged to grow, and supported to meet high expectations.
Effective School Leadership
Staying consistent with the choice of color keeps the tool unified and allows for the user to understand the information more effectively.
The Effective School Leadership rating looks at how well school leadership inspires the school community with a clear instructional vision and effectively distributes leadership to realize this vision.
Strong Family Community Ties
This is a metrics that was assessed and needed to be in this product. Highlighting the color bar above and below the tab words communicates similar to a file folder.
The Strong Family-Community Ties rating looks at how well the school forms effective partnerships with families and outside organizations to improve the school.
Trust
This is one of the metrics that are assessed and are needing to be shown in this product. Remaining visually consistent from homepage through the final page. Keeping the font size, and character the same throughout, as well as playing with color, but keeping to a simple pallet.
The Trust rating looks at whether relationships between school leaders, teachers, students, and families are based on trust and respect.
Mobile Version
Through Google Analytics I was able to assess that about half of our users looks through a mobile application or tablet. So we made our tool responsive to fit web, tablet, and mobile.
Digital Prototype
This is a video walk through of the final prototype.
